Hey Caddyshackers

Whilst the 1st of December marks the start of summer, it also marks the day of something much closer to our hearts at Caddyshack.

The 1st December each year is

World AIDS Day.

It raises awareness across the world and in the community about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It’s a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

World AIDS Day is signified by the Red Ribbon

We are all too familiar with the pink ribbon for breast cancer, the white ribbon for violence and the blue ribbon for the world’s best ice-cream.

But in all seriousness, did you know that the Red Ribbon was the first ever ribbon of its type to convey a message of support.

W display the Red Ribbon to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and to keep it at the forefront of people’s minds, despite the amazing advances we have made in recent years with treatment and prevention.

The Red Ribbon Surfboard has been one of the most iconic projects our team has been running since 2010.

World AIDS Day Red Ribbon Surfboard

Because our team is based along the South Coast of NSW, Australia the influence of the coast is strong and reflected in the large surfing population.

A local artist designs and produces a surfboard which goes on a six month tour from July to December each year, with organisations hosting a two week stay. The community are invited to enter the competition to win the Red Ribbon Surfboard.

The board features local artists, and this year Karolina Ventner from Kiama has designed a board featuring Karl Schmid, an Australian born ABC correspondent who has been living with HIV for ten years. Karl came out as being HIV positive, despite being advised not to, as it would affect his career.

Who we are loving right now

We are totally crushing on Jonathan Van Ness from Queer Eye who recently came out as being HIV positive.

His reasoning for doing so was because he felt that the Trump administration had done everything they could to have the stigmatize the LGBTI+ community, so he felt the need to talk about it with his newly published memoir ‘Over The Top’.
